How We Spent Our Summer Part 1 - Travel Baseball
I got lazy when I got Facebook, and now I wish I'd written more.
So here's a start on our summer. Here's what we've done.
We've played baseball. Every week. Every weekend, excluding Mother's Day and Father's Day although I'm sure we played in the yard on both of those weekends.
My boys are baseball-crazy and I'm okay with that. We love watching and playing with them, and my husband is actually enjoying his coaching responsibilities as well.
Last August, we decided to give travel baseball a try. We'd previously sworn off travel sports, and even slightly judged the parents that were putting their young kids in travel leagues, I have to admit.
Then, the stars aligned.
We were coming off of two mildly disappointing rec league seasons. The boys both enjoyed their teams, but they wanted to play with some better kids as well. Kids that could possibly catch a thrown ball, and maybe even kids that didn't ask to sit out every couple of innings.
And then we heard that a travel team was expanding and taking up residence (home field) in the sports park across the road. Our home fields. And literally, just across the field.
Ben tried out and made the 10U team. And Owen, after a sorted coaching path story, ended up on the 8U team, coached by my husband.
I lectured both boys. I talked about the financial investment we were making, and the fact that because we've made the commitment to this team, it comes first before other fun opportunities that might come up. One. Whole. Year. of commitment.
I suspected, and even voiced to my husband that both boys might just want to quit before the year wrapped. But we'd make them stick it out. And then they'd never want to try out for a travel team again.
I will now eat those words.
Our 10U team wrapped up their season with a tournament last weekend, and 8U is on track to play once more during the final weekend of July. Both boys are so enthusiastic about baseball that they considered dropping football this year (but decided to stay with it - yay! *sarcasm*) to focus more on pitching and catching.
Both teams had disappointing seasons, by travel team standards, with fewer wins than losses. But they still loved it. They loved the boys on the teams, and getting to know them throughout the year. They loved the new skills they learned, and the opportunities they had to improve upon the basics. They loved the weekends we spent away from home, focused on them and on the games, and not on the never ending yard and house work.
And although my house has never looked worse, I think we've never had a better summer, with more dedicated time together.
And we're all looking forward to travel baseball tryouts for next year... coming up in just under 3 weeks!

Climb Time Part 2... Owen @the bottom!
Toothless!

"Hey Connor Guess What.."
Owen: "Hey Connor my cat is getting spayed this weekend."
Connor: "What is spayed?"
Owen: "I have no idea."
Possible that no one thinks it's funny but me, but it made me laugh out loud when she texted me with the exchange!
I did ask Jason what he has been sharing about spaying a cat.. He said that yesterday morning he mentioned that it's time for him to take "Shadow," a female cat who just showed up at our house one day, to spay her.
Good thing that he didn't elaborate on the topic of "spaying" or I think we'd have a very educated pre-K class on our hands!

Owen's Fashion Sense
No, that's not one of my boys! (but Owen did look cute in that hat for a few minutes while we shopped around TJ Maxx)
That's Kallie, one of Owen's friends who is also his Pre-K classmate. She had birthday in December and both boys went to her "girly" party (and had fun!).
Owen was excited about picking out her birthday present.
It took awhile but after several rounds of swapping this in and that out, he settled on the hat, shirt, and purse shown above. He chose the purse because of the "lip gloss and hair stuff" that it came with. According to him girls just love lip gloss! ha!
Kallie loved the outfit and put it on right there at the party... which totally made Owen's day.
He will make some woman a great husband one day. He's very complimentary - "Mom I love your new necklace." And he's great at noticing new things... a new dress, new shoes, even a new purse. And he has great taste. I'm wearing the penguin necklace that he chose as a Christmas gift right now.
Sweet little guy... rough and tumble, but full of surprises!
Christmas 2010 @the Indiana State Museum
We go each year just before Christmas to the Indiana State Museum. The boys think it's cool to see the Indiana history, especially the areas with rocks, animal tracks, and formerly live animals (now stuffed!). They ride the train and sit on Santa's lap for our official kids w/Santa photo. And they visit the gift shop, which is always the most important stop of any museum!
And a fun sleigh photo before we left... after about 12 takes, this was the one that exhibited the most cooperation by both boys!
New Jerseys
I don't know how it happened, or when, but our little boys have become, well boys!
Boys who are into sports jerseys and sports. Always wanting to throw a football. Playing soccer and basketball, and tennis. They both wanted Purdue jerseys, and Owen put both Purdue and Colts jerseys on his Christmas list.
And out of nowhere, Ben started asking for Nike fleece, hi-top tennis shoes, Under Armour, and North Face. He's a big fan of Dick's Sporting Goods. Thankfully I'm a big fan of thrift stores who sell Under Armour and North Face for mere pennies on the dollar!
Oh how quickly they grow up.
If We had Sent a Christmas Card..
it would have looked like this..
Last year I had the cards printed but never got them mailed.
The year before I didn't mail them until March. And a few, I've learned recently, were addressed but never mailed.
So this year, this is your Christmas card.
Merry Christmas 2010!
With love from the Huff family
